Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Rural Psychology Job Announcement
The Minnesota Consortium for Advanced Rural Psychology Training (MCARPT) is a non-profit
training, consortium whose primary purpose is to prepare newly graduated Ph.D./Psy.D.
students in clinical or counseling psychology for clinical practice in rural, frontier, and
underserved areas and to train students to understand the unique challenges and
opportunities of rural America.
MCARPT is made up of 15 cooperating agencies located in a tri-county area of Northern
Minnesota's lake country. Funded entirely by private donations and grants, MCARPT offers a
one-year (2000 hour) post doctoral fellowship in rural psychology and mental health designed
to meet the requirements for licensure in Minnesota and other states. Selected students
participate in multiple rotational experiences at consortium member agencies which expose
them to the basic competency areas of rural practice through clinical activity at each consortium
member site with extensive individual and group supervision.
Clinical experiences may include:
- Extensive experience delivering psychological services in primary care rural health care
clinics to include assessment, diagnosis, and psychotherapeutic treatment.
- Consultation to community hospitals and nursing homes.
- Consultation and practice with agencies serving clients with problems with alcohol and
other drugs of abuse (AODA).
- Consultation to local school districts and school personnel including school
psychologists.
- Experience in cross cultural issues of rural practice through consultation to Federal and
Native American Indian agencies serving consultation to Federal and Native American
Indian agencies serving the White Earth Band of Ojibwe.
- Consultation to local domestic abuse shelter and provision of psychological services to
victims of violence and trauma.
- Exposure to and participation in the activities and programs offered by county social
service agencies and law enforcement.
- Participation in alternative forms of treatment delivery including day treatment and
intensive in-home treatment.
Requirements:
- An earned Ph.D./Psy.D. from an APA accredited doctoral program in clinical or
counseling psychology with a strong interest in rural practice and serving the needs of
traditionally underserved rural populations
- An APA approved or APPIC listed pre-doctoral internship or equivalent.
- 3 letters of recommendation from professionals familiar with the applicant's integrity
and experience.
- Copies of graduate transcripts.
- A written sample of the applicant's professional work such as diagnostic assessment,
psychological test report, or other evaluative report, with all identifying information
carefully recused.
